The Thistle
This beautiful purple flower tops a surprisingly tough, prickly plant, which is difficult to pull from the ground. Some say it is like the Scottish people.
Legend has it that in the early 11th century, a raiding party of Vikings were attacking a Scottish castle at night, and took off their shoes to keep quiet. They jumped into the castle moat to swim across, but found the ditch dry and full of thistles. Their cries of pain woke the Scots defenders, who defeated their enemies, and thus starting the long association with the thistle.
